“Bad” Weather Effect

I am sometimes asked if the weather affects the coffee business.

It would seem that there are cold days when a hot cup would be in order and hot days when an iced drink would hit the spot. Some dreary days seem natural for a cup and a good read. Some sunny, glorious days would seem to encourage being out and about and not hanging out in the coffee shop. That’s what it would seem.

However, in looking at the big picture over time, there doesn’t seem to be a very close relationship between the actual weather conditions and the number of customers we serve in our shop.

There is perhaps one possible exception.

It is my observation that the “threat” of serious weather conditions has a very real affect on our business. It seems that a very dramatic interpretation of the doppler radar, delivered with the appropriate ominous tone of the the world’s end does in fact keep people away from the store. It saddens me that the fear of possible conditions carries more behavior shaping weight than the actual conditions.

Just a thought as I look out the window and watch this “blizzard” that prevented our usual Thursday morning crowd from coming to the store.

Just a note to let you know that your coffee was a hit in Salerno, Afghanistan. My parents Marvin and Sharon Smyth probably sent 10+ pounds of beans in a variety of flavors and all were a hit.
